SOME 3,000 students at Peter Symonds College in Winchester may have been cold recently, but they are glowing after being told they are studying at one of the best in the country.
They are celebrating the latest news confirming that they attend one of the top colleges in the UK, following the publication of the latest exam league tables for 2009.
By the usual measure of points per student in A-level and equivalent exams, not only was Symonds ranked top college in Hampshire, but it was also rated third nationally, behind only Cardinal Newman College, Preston, and Winstanley College,Wigan.
Principal Neil Hopkins said: “This is our highest ever score and is based on the results of last year’s upper sixth — 1,329 students.
“Our points score was 1,052, which in layman’s terms means that the average student scored the equivalent of around three grade As and a B at Alevel.
“We are very proud of our students and our staff. This is an amazing college of which to be to be a part.We expect a lot of the students here but we seek to give a lot in return, and we always remember our motto — we count in ones.”
Farnborough college in north Hampshire was 5th in the country, and the next best placed local college was Alton, which was ranked 41st.
