ARMED with rolling pins, flour and a lot of chocolate, Hampshire school children have been busy baking up a storm – all in the name of charity.

Six Sarisbury Junior School pupils – known as the Tasties – banded together for a grand cake sale in Whiteley Shopping Centre to raise money for Winchester and District Young Carers.

The group baked non-stop in preparation producing a popular multi-layered rainbow cake, brownies, muffins and cookies.

All in all they raised £230 which was then matched with gift aid by Basepoint Winchester.

Alison Cross, of the carers, was presented with a cheque for £586.03.

“I am very impressed with the determination and hard work that the Tasties team have demonstrated in their fundraising, and feel very privileged to accept the big cheque on behalf of Winchester Young Carers,” she said.

“The money raised will go towards offering the young carers at primary school age many activities – including swimming and a treasure hunt - to make them smile. Thank you so much – and well done Sarisbury Junior School.”

Headteacher Andrew Stockton added: “I am glad we have been able to celebrate the work of these year 6 students with a wonderful cheque presentation ceremony. This is just one of the great things that our year 6s have been doing in recent months – raising money, recycling, litter picking, environmental projects, performing at old people day centres: the list is endless.

"I am very proud of all our hard-working and enterprising young people.”
