A UNIVERSITY of Winchester project which helps students improve their study environment has been shortlisted for a Guardian University Award.

It is one of three institutions selected for the awards’ Student Experience category which recognise best practice, achievement and innovation across the UK higher education sector.

The Student Fellows Scheme – which has been led by Winchester Student Union and the learning and teaching development department – aims to boost the educational and social environment through staff-student partnerships.

Tom Lowe, Winchester Student Union’s vice president for education, said: “It is incredible that the Student Fellows Scheme has been nominated for the Student Experience Award in the Guardian University Awards.

“It really shows that Winchester is leading the way in student engagement – our staff and student collaborations have empowered the student body and created change to benefit the student experience.”

De Montfort University and the University of Hertfordshire are also in the running for the prize, the judges for which include the Rt Hon David Willetts MP, former Minister for Universities and Science, and representatives from the higher education sector.

Dr Stuart Sims, research and teaching fellow for student engagement, added: “It’s great to receive such high-profile recognition for all of the hard work that student fellows put into their projects and the big difference that they can make through the scheme.

“It’s also a great acknowledgement of an environment at Winchester that is supportive of innovative ideas to enhance the student experience and that prioritises empowering students to play an active role in their teaching and learning.”

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on March 18.
