A COLLEGE chemistry lab was transformed into a replica crime scene for the day as forensics students simulated scenes from a cult TV series.
Eastleigh College students donned hazard suits earlier this month to hunt for clues in a mock investigation.
The exercise was inspired by cult American TV series Breaking Bad, in which a struggling chemistry teacher teams up with a former student to build a methamphetamine empire.
Criminology, forensic science, criminal psychology and public service students were all assessed on their ability to investigate and collect evidence to professional standards.
Sergeant Colin White, from Hampshire police, was on hand to ensure they were bagging the evidence correctly and minimising contamination risk.
Applied science student Sam Brett Cooper said: “It was very interesting and it’s what I wanted to do in college. It’s the sort of stuff I’m looking forward to doing when I go on to university.”
Peter Croft, forensic science tutor, said: “These sorts of exercises are absolutely excellent for the students. It gives them practical experience and experience of a simulated crime scene with people from the police. The students are able to receive direct advice from the police as to what is current best practice, including health and safety and all other crime scene procedures that they must adhere to.”
