IT may be a small rural school but that won’t stop it from having a big celebration.
Itchen Abbas Primary School, near Winchester, has officially opened its new library and children have been busy unpacking around 100 new books.
“We are just so excited because the children now have a really good resource that they didn’t have before,” said headteacher Aimee Dear.
The library was previously located in a small room which Ms Dear said made it impossible to teach whole classes at once.
Over Christmas it was moved into a wide corridor which runs the length of the school.
Ms Dear said: “It looks fantastic. The children are going in there and doing library skills lessons. We have got new books to rejuvenate it and we are looking forward to getting more. We are going to be looking to see how we can open it up to parents to come in too.”
The library has been named The Reading Nest, thought up by smart schoolboy Matthew Duke, five, (pictured above) who linked the bird-themed class names.
Shelving has been donated from Henry Beaufort School and £850 spent on new books.
After half-term the school will start using Bug Club – an online reading scheme which combines books and games.
