CONTROVERSIAL plans to replace artwork at an historic Winchester campus have been approved by city planners.
A “quirky” mosaic outside Winchester College Art School is set to be replaced with a modern aluminium design.
The insecure tiles put students at risk and repairs have cost the college tens of thousands of pounds, city councillors heard at planning committee.
Arthur Morgan, the college’s former art director, was one of five objectors.
He said the significance of original architect Edward Cullinan’s design would be “destroyed” and the “cheap-looking” replacement would weaken the school’s heritage.
Alison Davidson, historic environment manager, said college bosses “didn’t want to make a poor mimic and would rather do something modern.”
