A Winchester primary school has become one of Britain’s best performers in end-of-year exams, new figures reveal.

St Faith’s Church of England Primary School came joint first in December’s National League Tables for Standard Assessment Tests results.

The St Cross school, which doesn’t stream pupils by ability, enjoyed a record year for attainment.

Three out of four Year 6 pupils left with level 5 maths and English, with nearly half achieving level 6 maths.

Headteacher Dawn James said: “It’s an affirmation of the outstanding teaching that happens here.

"We don’t put the children into ability sets, but teach all children to the highest levels.”

Chair of governors Ed Francis said: “I feel there’s something fantastic in the atmosphere of this school.

“It’s a tremendous learning space – everywhere you look there are children developing and soaking up knowledge like sponges.”
