WINCHESTER college students are keeping their friend’s memory alive by raising money for a charity which was set up in his name.

BTEC Sport students chose The Joe Glover Trust as their nominated charity for their lunchtime sport festival, which raised £476.32.

Many of the Peter Symonds College students would have known Joe at nursery or primary school before he died aged eight of a rare and aggressive form of Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

The trust was set up in 2007 and works with families and specialist children’s cancer units across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands.

“Joe’s death in 2006 devastated his family as well as the wider community,” said Jane Wilmshurst, fundraising and events manager.

“However, his memory is kept alive by those who run and support charity events in his name, such as this one. This money will be used to assist parents with the costs incurred on their trips to oncology units for treatment sessions. Thank you.”

BTEC Sport teacher, Katie Taylor, said: “This group of students have excelled and shown that with good planning and joint efforts just how successful an event can be. The group worked extremely hard and their combined determination has really paid dividends.

“This is the largest amount any BTEC Sport group have ever raised for this 50-minute event. We are all really pleased to be donating so much to such a worthwhile cause.”

The students involved were: James Airey; Kit Barnes; Brad Castle; Matt Chant; Charlotte Cunliffe; Ben Iles; Joe Marchant; Sam Martin; Tom McCartney; Harvey North; Amy Parsons; Samuel Preece; and Lauren Townly.
