WINCHESTER University has celebrated its diversity with a five-day event coinciding with Black History Month.

Disability, equality and culture were all on the agenda as part of Diversity Week, which highlights the university’s growing international base.

Festivities included lectures, film screenings, dancing, yoga and an introduction to the university’s new PeaceJam hub, a scheme coaching young people in global leadership with Nobel peace laureates.

There was also a diversity showcase including international fashion, performance and entertainment, where 40 models showcased traditional outfits from 17 countries.

A presentation was held on dyspraxia and performances tackled stereotypes of the LGBTI community and feminism.

Maria Jones, showcase director and chair of the International Society, said: “It was great to see students embracing the chance to be involved in a variety of performances, taking pride in showing who they are and where they are from.

“It's important to show and celebrate differences – everyone deserves the chance to be treated as well as everyone else, with acceptance and understanding, regardless of ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability or religion.”
