PUPILS at a Wickham school swapped their skirts and trousers for jeans to raise £250 for children with genetic disorders, including an eight-year-old classmate.

Staff at Wickham Church of England Primary School also dug out their denim for the national Jeans for Genes day to support pupil Jack Layton, who has muscular dystrophy.

Jack’s mother, Jules, of Houghton Gardens in Wickham, said pupils in the school council have chosen to support the charity every year since Jack started in 2010.

“It makes us feel good,” she said. “The thing that’s most important to us as a family is that it’s education. They are tomorrow’s doctors and scientists.”

Headteacher Maria Ackland said: “School staff work closely with Jack’s parents and advisors from the local authority to ensure that Jack enjoys really productive learning experiences. He is a very positive young learner who thoroughly enjoys all aspects of our school life.”

The class led a school assembly on Friday (Sep 19) to explain genetic disorders and the struggles of children who have them.
