WHAT could possibly be worse then finding a giant insect in your sandwich? Perhaps it would be discovering that it’s only half a giant insect.
That’s exactly what a south Hampshire schoolgirl claimed happened when she took a bite out of her favourite snack and discovered that she was eating a huge bug.
Georgia Davis, 15, had just bought the barbecue chicken wrap from the supermarket next door to her Warsash home.
As she was eating it, she chomped down on what she assumed was an overcooked piece of meat only to find that what she had in her mouth was the creature’s head.
She then saw the rest of the inch and half-long brown insect still in her food and she immediately began to feel ill.
The Co-op has now launched an investigation into the incident.
Georgia said: “At first, I just could not believe it and my friend and I kept checking to make sure our eyes hadn’t been playing tricks on us.
“It was when I saw the wings that it sunk in and I just started retching and hours later I couldn’t stop whenever I thought about it.
“We both were disgusted. It was huge and it looked like a locust or a cockroach.
“These chicken wraps used to be my favourite thing, but now I don’t think I will ever be able to eat one again.”
The two teenagers went back into the Co-op store, in Warsash Road, to complain to the manager who then sent it to the company headquarters for tests.
Georgia’s mother, Claire Chambers, also contacted environmental health, the store and the retail chain’s head office.
The manager of the store was unavailable for comment.
However, a spokesman for the firm’s head office said: “We received a complaint from a customer at our Warsash store, who bought a product there which appeared to contain an insect.
“The product was returned to our store, where staff provided a full refund, and it has been sent to our head office for analysis.
“We will be taking this matter up with our supplier and will update the customer when we have more information.”
