ONE of Eastleigh’s last surviving D-Day heroes has died.
Samuel Gerrard, pictured, who was known as Harry, died at the age of 89 at Flkeming House Nursing Home.
Eastleigh MP, Chris Huhne, who awarded Harry his veteran’;s badge in September, paid tribute to the former Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment gunner, who, in World War II, fought in the Normandy landings, in June, 1944, arriving at the beachhead at 5am, in daylight.
“Harry was rightly proud of his role in the Normandy landings that did so much to change the course of history and secure our freedom for future generations,” said Mr Huhne.
“His family and friends in Eastleigh will mourn the passing of someone who made a difference to many people’s lives.”
