THERE will be lots of interest in the idea being discussed in Colden Common to hire a company called Parking Eye to police the use of the car park at the village recreation ground.

The parish is looking at using the firm to stamp out unauthorised use of the car park. Offenders’ registration plates would be filmed, the driver traced, presumably through the DVLA, and the motorists then receiving demands for payment through the post.

Parking Eye operate in Southampton and their activities have been a source of some controversy.

The parish council argues that unauthorised use is filling the car park and so deterring legitimate use of the rec’s facilities. And perhaps it will be a potential cash cow.

It does seem a sledgehammer to crack a nut.

This is a kind of wheel clamping but without the need for bulky wheelclamps and the grim-faced clampers, although other descriptions are available.

There will be scores of people who unfairly fall foul of the rules.

It does not take much imagination to conjure up the potential victims who will contact this newspaper at the injustice of being caught by Parking Eye.

Is it an avenue that we really want to go down? First Colden Common, then every space in every town and every village? Trying to create money out of every perceived transgression?
