Barton Peveril starts work on £5m state-of-the-art science complex

Barton Peveril College’s three-storey building will house 12 state-of-the-art labs and preparation rooms for biology, chemistry, physics and electronics.

It also includes classroom space, a cafe and large areas for private study.

Its quirky focal point is a brise soleil – solar shade - to deflect sunlight from the south-facing glass elevation to help the building’s green credentials by way of sustainable design.

It is the second major campus redevelopment project to be designed by HNW Architects and built by Fareham-based Amiri Construction, following a £4.2 million classroom block and media centre which opened last summer.

The block is already reaping the benefits of green technology through its photovoltaic roof panels and rainwater harvesting system.

Like the former centre it has been funded by a combination of the college’s capital reserves, planning borrowing and Government grants.

Barton Peveril principal, Jonathan Prest, said: “Ongoing investment in first class teaching facilities underpins our commitment to preparing teenagers for higher education, apprenticeships and fulfilling careers in an increasingly scientific world.

“STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths – are an important part of the local plan for generating wealth and opportunity and I’m sure that this new building will inspire even more young people to study these vital subjects in the future.”

Amiri site manager Andrew McArthur and construction director Neil Cole invited director of science, Nathan Cheung and a group of science students to view drawings and learn more about the current phase of construction.

First year chemistry and physics student, Chas Singh, said: “The new building looks cool. It’s really exciting to have new facilities and it certainly encourages people to come here.”
