A FORMER student has returned to Eastleigh College to inspire others on how to progress in a career in art.

Rob Gray, who studied there from 2006-2009, is now undertaking a masters degree in illustration and was invited back as part of the visiting artists programme.

He spoke to school of visual arts and media pupils about his ambition to become a commercial illustrator for children’s books.

After the talk, pre-degree foundation diploma in art, design and media student, Crystal Chia, said she was inspired.

“It was interesting to see how his work has developed over the years and how he has progressed from Eastleigh College to studying illustration at masters level,” she said.

After his time at Eastleigh College Mr Gray progressed to Cardiff School of Art and Design, then worked as a freelance in Winchester, before moving to London last September to study Visual Arts: Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts.

He said: “Hopefully my own personal progression route talk today has allowed the students to see what is achievable. They should make the most of all the opportunities available at the college and experiment as much as possible with different art mediums. This will help them with compiling a comprehensive portfolio to show at university interviews.”

Course manager Dr Sebastiane Hegarty said: “It’s always rewarding to be able to invite back former students who are progressing well with their studies and furthering their careers, and Rob is no exception. We have an ambitious group of students at present and I’m expecting to continue our 100 per cent success rates in applications to university this year.”
