Heffron, 44, of Trussell Crescent, Weeke, Winchester, admitted taking the item, valued at £40, from the Royal Green Jackets Museum at Peninsula Barracks on March 17.
He received a conditional discharge for 18 months.
Magistrates in Basingstoke ordered he pay £40 compensation, a £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
