Police officers were headbutted, punched, driven at and spat at during a spate of violence across Hampshire.

As many as 17 of the county’s officers were the victims of attacks in just two days.

Now chairman of the Hampshire Police Federation John Apter, who represents rank and file officers, has called for tougher action against those who attack officers.

The violence comes just a month after 18 officer attacks were recorded over two weekends.

More of the assaults this weekend took place in Southampton than at any other location.

Mr Apter said: “There used to be the feeling that being assaulted was just part of the job, but offenders need to be dealt with properly. I want the public to see the reality of policing and what our officers go out to face every day.

“I don’t think officers have faith in the judicial system, just because of the guidelines that have to be followed. They need confidence that assaults on officers are going to be dealt with seriously.”

He added: “Seventeen is a high number for one weekend, but on one hand I am pleased that they feel that they can report these incidents. It shouldn’t be the case where officers have to face this, we need to give them the support they need.”

Last month Hampshire Police revealed that officers will be offered spit hoods to protect themselves from being spat at, a move which was criticised by Amnesty International.

Since April, more than 125 assaults involving spitting have been recorded by Hampshire officers.

A police spokesman said: “Thankfully none of the officers have sustained any serious injuries. We do not tolerate assaults on our officers or staff and have robust measures in place to support those affected and investigate the incidents fully.

“Hampshire Constabulary is the first police force in the country to develop its own plan for ensuring incidents of assault on police officers or staff are investigated properly and those affected are fully supported in this process.

“Our people have a difficult job and we are committed to doing everything we can to support them.”

Four officers were punched, two were headbutted and two were driven at by a vehicle.
