WINCHESTER has been hit by a wave of car crime, with 38 thefts from vehicles reported this year.
Wallets, tools, sat navs, sunglasses and jewellery have been stolen since January 7, with police now operating spot checks to ensure unattended vehicles are locked.
Areas affected since include Badger Farm, St Cross, Stanmore and Winnall.
Inspector Jon Turton said: "The message really is simple: lock it or lose it. Thieves will walk along the streets trying door handles to exploit insecure vehicles, so always make sure you leave it locked.
“Don’t leave items of any value on display, making it more tempting for them to try to get into your vehicle. Please be vigilant in your area and report any suspicious activity immediately.
"We are currently following up on lines of enquiry that may assist us to identify those involved in a number of these thefts".
Officers highlighted the theft of a valuable Tiffany bracelet from a car in Upper Brook Street on January 11.
