A FEMALE nurse was attacked by an inmate during an outbreak of violence at Winchester Prison yesterday.

Several prisoners face extended sentences after an incident at around 11.45am.

Police are investigating an assault against the nurse, who was taken to hospital with minor injuries but is now back at work.

A Prison Service spokesman said today: "A number of prisoners were involved in an incident at HMP Winchester on Sunday.

"This was quickly resolved by staff and all prisoners responsible have been moved to other prisons. The police are also conducting an investigation.

"We do not tolerate violence in our prisons. Those responsible for violence face spending longer behind bars."

Gang violence and use of legal highs are a "huge concern" at the jail, according to an official report issued earlier this year.
