AN investigation has been launched after a blaze broke out in Winchester Prison in the early hours of today.
A fire broke out in a cell in prison’s B Wing block at around 2am.
Prison officers led an inmate to safety while onsite fire teams put out the flames.
The occupant was taken to the prison infirmary and is believed to have been uninjured.
No other prisoners were hurt and remained in their cells throughout.
Crews from Winchester, Eastleigh and Sutton Scotney fire stations arrived to check the building and ventilate the cell.
Winchester Fire Station crew manager Nick Mills said the fire caused damage to belongings in the cell including clothing and paper.
Crews left the site at 3am.
