A CONVICTED murderer turned prisons campaigner will be speaking in Winchester this week.

Erwin James will provide an insight into today’s jails during a public lecture at the university on Thursday.

Mr James is now an award-winning writer and columnist for The Guardian.

He served 20 years of a life sentence for murder before release in 2004 and is now a campaigner for prison reform and the rehabilitation of offenders.

His lecture, titled Some Truths About Prisons, is hosted by the University’s Crime and Justice Research Centre, which was launched last year to foster the sharing of information and research among experts and students.

Dr Alan Grattan, senior lecturer in criminology at the university, said: “The Crime and Justice Research Centre is pleased to welcome such a well-known speaker to the university. This is the first of a series of talks hosted by the Centre throughout the academic year.

“This lecture further enhances the rapidly growing reputation of both the Centre and the University in the areas of crime and justice, criminology and social sciences.”

Some Truths About Prisons takes place at 6.30pm on Thursday October 16 at The Stripe, King Alfred Campus, Sparkford Road, Winchester, SO22 4NR.

The lecture is free but booking is essential – email Alan.Grattan@winchester.ac.uk or Tim.Hall@winchester.ac.uk
