Filmmakers, composers and songwriters keen to earn income from music in films and TV have a rare chance to quiz leading music and film industry experts at a face-to-face event in Southampton.

Run by Film Expo South, the seminar is designed to give filmmakers and musicians essential advice on licensing songs and recordings for a fair price while protecting copyright and creative interest.

Subjects include how to negotiate publishing deals and ensure royalties for music used in feature films, TV programmes, commercial advertising, gaming and online videos.

Chairing the expert panel is Ivan Chandler, a specialist in music copyright and licensing.

Ivan, who has played keyboards with artists such as Dusty Springfield, Lulu, Cat Stevens and Motown legends The Marvelettes, said: “This is a great opportunity for composers, musicians, producers, managers and agents to connect with industry insiders, financiers and filmmakers to learn about additional income streams and avoid some of the pitfalls in music management.”

Joining Ivan is Richard Kirstein, an independent music rights expert, who said: “If musicians early in their careers can learn about how rights work they are less likely to be taken advantage of by rights buyers.

“The more they understand the business side, the better their chances are to monetise their creativity.”

Also on the panel is media lawyer Luke English from Bournemouth-based Laceys Solicitors.

Luke has worked on music copyright issues for the BBC, Disney and the worldwide music distributor PIAS.

Two other locally-based musicians will share their experiences too: Matt Black, a pianist, composer, producer and recording studio owner, and Freddy D’Albert, ex-lead guitarist with iconic group The Drifters, who has composed music for several TV commercials.

The event is being organised by actor Gillian Tully, founder and Chief Executive of Film Expo South.

Gillian said: “Our 2018 seminar programme began with a focus on film finance and we are really looking forward to following that up with this dedicated event about music in film, adding the sound to the vision as it were.

“It will bring together filmmakers, composers and musicians.

“Film Expo South is all about connecting people involved in film making in our region so that together we can make and share more movie magic.”

The event has been welcomed by Maureen Frost, chair of the regional creative industries group Creative Network South.

Maureen said: “There is so much local film making talent that deserves to be nurtured and supported.

“In addition, Hampshire and surrounding areas are frequently used for film and TV locations.

“Thanks to the work of Gillian and Film Expo South, hopefully we will see more local musicians gaining work in the film industry supply chain.”

Attendees at the event will have the chance to win a day’s booking of a brand new green screen facility at Apex Studios in Droxford.

‘Making Money from Music’ takes place at The Stage Door in West Marlands Road, Southampton on Saturday, September 29. There are two seminars, at 11am and 2pm.

The event is being sponsored by UK Talk Radio, Riffbuster, Barnes-Wilkes Group and Laceys Solicitors incorporating HLF.
