HAVING reached nearly half a year with no lost time accidents, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Terminals UK (WWT) is hoping to reach the 200-day milestone before Christmas.

The current total is the longest in the company’s history on the Port of Southampton – dating back to 2006 when Southampton Euro Terminals became WWT.

“We operate a Safety/Quality/Environment bulletin system, printed on yellow paper for safety, Purple for quality and green for environment so each stands out on the notice boards, as many staff do not have access to a computer we can have a bulletin on the notice board anywhere in the company within 15 minutes if an issue needs to be addressed quickly,” said Dave Hayden, HSEQ manager at WWT.

And asked how they tackle complacency, Dave said: “We never let the subject drop, we always keep it in the forefront of everyone’s mind and daily routine.

“As the health and safety Manager, one of my biggest drivers is to always keep safety, and environment and quality in every staff members psyche every day.

“We reap the benefits and I can be pleased that every member of staff goes home in one piece at the end of the day, both physically and mentally. In our world 'Zero is a Hero'."
