A FAREHAM businessman has turned an idea into reality as Hampshire’s first Tuk-Tuk importer and customiser.

Tuk-Tuk Direct was set up by local businessman David Goodyer, 49 from Locks Heath, near Fareham.

A former financial advisor, David got the inspiration to set up the firm after seeing the vehicles on holiday and having come up in conservation with friends in a local pub several years ago so wanting a change in his career, he leapt at a potential business opportunity in importing Tuk-Tuks and selling them.

The electrical eco-friendly vehicles which are common India emit no C02, can travel up to 30mph and seat several people at a time.

He started importing the vehicles into the UK from China last year and they were soon snapped up by customers almost immediately.

After noticing the demand, David also turned his attention to hiring and converted six into Prosecco Time Tuk-Tuks that he will rent for private festivals and events.

He said: “I wanted to start my own business and try something different having been a financial advisor for more than 20 years.

“I came across the idea of Tuk-Tuks after a long chat with friends in the pub some years ago, so I decided to take it upon myself to start up the concept.

“Since starting the business in October I have never looked back since and have had a lot of demand and bookings for weddings and private events and parties.”

David is now looking to expand into the festival market and have a presence at major UK festivals including Victorious and Glastonbury, having already secured a presence at smaller events including the Gosport Marine Festival.

He added: “The popularity of the Tuk-Tuk has been so successful that we are now looking at festivals either by providing the vehicles lock, stock and barrel with stock and staff, or hiring them out alone.”
