PLANS for a state-of-the-art care home on the site of one of Alresford’s major businesses have been drawn up, with the creation of 23 jobs.

The proposal is to redevelop the current Warwick Trailers' site at The Dean and transform it into a three storey facility for the elderly.

It will include 49 one and two bedroom flats built and also a restaurant, a wellness room, guest suite and car parking.

It is understood that Warwick Trailers, which employs 38 people at the site, will be relocating to more suitable premises as part of their expansion plans, if the application is given the green light.

This may be in Sun Lane in Alresford, or an alternative base close to Eastleigh may be considered if there is not a suitable facility in the town.

The proposed building will be occupied by people over the age of 60, and their needs will be catered for by staff providing 24 hour cover, creating 23 jobs.

It will be managed by YourLife Management Services Limited, which is a joint venture between Somerset Care, an experienced not for profit specialist care provider and McCarthy & Stone.

Alresford ward councillor Simon Cook said he supports the plan.

Cllr Cook said: “I think it looks to me like a good idea, because it will we are an area that’s not covered and it is less expensive than the luxury flats at Station Road.

“It looks to me to be quite exciting; I would in principal support it. It looks very professionally well presented and I think it could be an enhancement to Alresford.”

Also keen is Alresford councillor Simon Evans. He said: “The idea of regenerating of that site I think is a good idea as long as it is done properly.”

However, ward councillor Margot Power believes the scheme should be revised to provide care for people with dementia and nursing care needs.

Cllr Power said: “I am supportive of the design as such but I will be objecting to the application on the grounds that employment space for this business is not yet available in Alresford; that it is premature until Local Plan Part Two has been approved and that it does not meet the total needs of the residents in regards to dementia and nursing care.

“However, I have visited the McCarthy & Stone premises in Eastleigh and I am happy with what it provides.”

Warwick Trailers, also known as Warwick Brothers, did not respond to a request for comment.
