A SOUTHAMPTON tiler has been named apprentice of the year as a national awards ceremony.

Selina Haagensen has scooped the prize at the National Construction College South and London Apprentice Awards 2015.

The 18-year-old from Southampton won the award her work as a roof slating and tiling apprentice with VOICE Ltd where she worked on a number of projects as part of her level two diploma.

The apprenticeship awards are run by the NCC which is the training branch of the Construction Industry Training Board.

Selina, pictured receiving her award, said: “I’m absolutely delighted to get this award, my apprenticeship has been a lot of hard work but it’s been worth it.

"I’ve learnt so much during the course but I’m eager to keep on learning and to improve all the time.

"I couldn’t believe I was nominated for the Level 2 – Roof Slating and Tiling Course award, so to be named overall Apprentice of the Year is just incredible.”

The NCC awards are run annually and celebrate the achievements and hard work of apprentices around the UK.

Carl Rhymer, a director on the Construction Industry Training Board, said: “We are passionate about what we do as a college and about recognising and celebrating success.

“It is all about acclaiming those apprentices, such as Selina, who have achieved outstanding results and demonstrated real commitment in kick-starting their careers in construction.”
