RESTAURANTERS of a popular Japanese noodle bar have confirmed an opening date for its new Winchester location.

Wagamama will open to the public on July 20 at the newly-converted Century House in Jewry Street.

The national chain, which is based on traditional Japanese ramen bars, was given the green light by Winchester civic chiefs last April following months of planning disputes.

The Level 10 Church site will be renovated into a large restaurant across the lower and ground floors with two apartments sitting above, following approval of a revised plan in December.

Business rival Miff Kayam reportedly objected the plans, stating the chain would damage independent traders.

Works are expected to be finished by July 15 ready in time for a preview weekend – by invitation only.

Previous reports suggest the restaurant would create 36 jobs though this has not yet been re-confirmed.
