EIGHT new 'affordable' homes are set to be built in a Meon Valley village.

Winchester city councillors voted in favour of plans submitted by Richard Waite for the homes built on a plot of land adjacent off Heath Road in Soberton.

The scheme for homes which are contained within four semi-detached houses is being promoted by Hyde Housing Association There has been mixed feedback from residents as nine objections have been submitted to Winchester City Council.

Residents warned that losing undeveloped land will damage the area’s rural character and ability to absorb floodwater, adding to congestion on the narrow road.

But there were also nine letters supporting the application and said it will offer housing to local people who can't afford to live independently.

Councillor Ian Tait praised the scheme, he said:"I will support the officer’s recommendation.

“What a welcome relief that it has overcome the parishes concerns and it is supported by a significant number of the community."

At the Winchester City planning committee councillors all voted in favour of the plans.
