New style carnival needs support

ORGANISERS of the renamed Andover Carnival have called on businesses in the town to support the event after a two-year hiatus.

The New Style Andover Carnival will take place on Sunday 13 July. Two walking parades from the east and west sides of town will meet in the High Street where a stage for music performances and other entertainment will be set up.

At last week's Andover Retailers' Meeting, Alex Gillies, landlord of the Station Hotel and chairman of the carnival committee, said businesses and other groups needed to support the event to raise the predicted £4,000 running cost.

"It's important we get good participation from local groups and individuals to make a cracking day," he said.

Christine Cole, Andover's Town Centre Manager, said: "We have a committee working on the carnival. We started off with about eight people, and at the last meeting our numbers seemed to swell to about 15.

"It's fantastic news that people want to help but there are so many jobs involved in this carnival that the more people we can get the better."

The carnival theme will be multicultural stage and screen', and child-friendly entertainment including drumming and costume-making workshops will be held before the parades on the day.

A fundraising wheelbarrow race will be held in the High Street on 9 July to lead up to the carnival.

An official website will soon be launched.
