Alresford civic chiefs are moving towards extending the car park at Arlebury Park.
The town council agreed the 30-space extension in principle and will now look for quotes.
The car park is coming under pressure because of misuse by some local people.
Council chairman Steve Middleton said some locals were parking their cars in the car park overnight and at the weekends and not using the Alresford Recreation Centre.
Cllr John Cattle said: "We need to get on with (building) it. We need the parking spaces."
The extra spaces will be on the grass strip next to the tennis courts.
Cllr Roy Gentry estimated hard surfacing could cost around £45,000. The money is likely to come from reserves.
