THE CENTREPICE OF Alresford’s Christmas celebration has had to be taken down because of safety fears.
A split was noticed in the 40-foot tree that stood in Broad Street forcing its removal yesterday afternoon.
Stephen Thorne, chairman of the Alresford Christmas Tree Committee, said today: “The tree can’t fall over as it is four feet into the ground but we took the view it was too dangerous to leave it there.”
After initially thinking there should be no replacement Mr Thorne said a new tree will be erected on Monday morning.
“The town would look bare without it. Everyone is being brilliant giving their time for free. It shows the community spirit in the town.”
