Green light for masterplan and probably for Barton Farm

THE new 20-year masterplan for the Winchester district was passed by councillors in the early hours today (Friday).

It makes the development of Barton Farm more likely as the plan acknowledges that Winchester does not have enough housing land to meet demand.

However, the plan could also provide a new primary school, and give greater protection to Bushfield Camp, which is also a greenfield site.

The controversial masterplan, which has been several years in the making, came before a special full council meeting yesterday (Thursday).

The marathon debate lasted until 2.30am today (Friday) and it was passed by 29 votes to 19, with six abstentions.

For more details about the crunch decision, see next Thursday’s Hampshire Chronicle.

I am guessing CRAIGC you are being sarcastic? I'm geting **** off with seeing developments in the city passed off as "office space" and lie empty for months on end when they could be residential places to rent!

As for Barton Farm, no,no,no! 2000 homes? In a small city this size? Ain't gonna work, it would practically be a small town! Theres already a "Social City" built in Winnall ,we don't need another one of that magnititude!

I see that all the Conservative councillors (except Eileen Berry who abstained despite a three-line whip) voted for this plan, and most Lib Dems (free vote) voted against or abstained. Obviously the Conservatives wish to develop Barton Farm, and always have despite their protestations, to justify outlandish claims about the number of houses "needed" in Winchester in the next twenty years. What we need in the city are affordable homes for local workers (hospital, councils, prison, local manufacturers, retailers etc.) close to their workplace, so these homes should be on brownfield sites near the city centre, Winnall & Bar End trading estates and hospital/prison, not on pristine greenfield farmland on the city outskirts with no employment. Barton Farm is designed to deliver high-priced (high profit) housing for commuters to London, with 40% "affordable" housing as a possible by-product, although if the Coalition criterion of 80% market rent is applied, the housing is hardly affordable in Winchester (and where will the people work anyway?).

Nope I'm not been sarcastic we need more housing & a lot more!. Barton Farm is a ideal location & just hope it all gets past as I'm sick of hearing people don't want this development when I know of a lot of people who do, its ok people protesting who live in their 3/4 bedroom homes near the city lucky them but more affordable homes are needed for nurses, teachers etc! Hopefully it will get the goahead & put this to bed once & for all!
