Amanda Smith takes over from Wayne Curson in Alresford

RURAL crime, anti-social behaviour and speeding are the priorities of a town's new police sergeant.

Amanda Smith, who has been with Hampshire Constabulary for 20 years, has taken up the reins at Alresford police station.

The 40-year-old, who lives near Chandler's Ford, takes over from Wayne Curson, who has moved to North Walls police station, Winchester.

"Our main priority is to be visible in the local community and engage with them," said Sgt Smith, who heads up a team consisting of two police constables and three community support officers. "I have inherited a very good team which get out and are well known."

Sgt Smith, who has had spells as a detective in Southampton and Eastleigh, said rural crime was something that "went unreported and something we aim to get to grips with". She added anti-social behaviour was a problem in the town on Fridays and Saturdays, as well as speeding in rural villages.
