Budding rugby star gets England call

AN Alresford student is celebrating after being selected for the England Under 16 rugby training squad.

Jamie Charlton-Little, 15, a pupil at Perins School, is set to train with the 40-man squad to prepare for two England U16 tournaments taking place during the Easter holiday.

The teenager caught the eye of England selectors at the U16 divisional festival last month where he represented the London and South East Region against the Midlands.

London and SE won 10-0 and Jamie is said to have made an impression with accurate throwing, strong ball carrying and ferocious tackling.

Jamie said: "I am thrilled at being chosen for the England Squad. I am particularly grateful for the invaluable support of several Perins staff - Mr Shepherd (throwing), Mr Faulkner (speed), Mr Hancock (tactical appreciation) and James Wood (strength)."

The teenager's playing time is divided between Winchester RFC, Perins School, Hampshire and London Irish. He is also a member of the latter's Gold Group Academy.

Depending on his success at the training camp, he will either be selected for the England U16 1st XV which will play in the "Four Nations" against France, Italy and Wales in Rome or the development squad which will play in an 8 nations tournament at Wellington College in Berkshire.
