SPECTATORS of all ages headed to Easton in the Itchen Valley for a family fun day to raise money for the local cricket club.

The Easton Sixes tournament, at the David Roth Memorial Ground, drew crowds from across the county, as eight teams battled for victory.

The event, sponsored by Charters for the fourth year running, was organised by Easton and Martyr Worthy Cricket Club to raise funds for its junior development academy which coaches and mentors players aged 13 to 21.

The action kicked off on Thursday with an Itchen Valley tug-of-war competition, won by Trevor Compton’s Easton village team.

The Friday fun day also included two bouncy castles, paddling pools, ice-creams, bar and hog roast.

The Sixes trophy was won by the Fenwick Elliott Eagles team, which included several EMWCC coaches and young players.

Their U11 team member Monty Randle won player of the day for taking two wickets in one over.

The celebrations continued on Sunday when the club marked its 70th birthday with an inter-generational match and Hampshire’s Jimmy Adams ran a coaching session for juniors.

The club president of 58 years, John Roth, planted a tree to mark the special birthday.

Memorial plaques for the following stalwart club members were also planted: Ben Marsh, Eric Thompson and Jess Hobbs.
