CAMPAIGNERS in Alresford dispute the level of support for development on farmland off Sun Lane.

Seaward Properties held a public exhibition at the town community centre of their plans for 300 homes.

Bob Fowler, spokesman for the Sun Hill and Tichborne Down Action Group, said there was little support for the scheme but huge opposition.

The proposal, included in the Local Plan has attracted hundreds of formal objections.

Mr Fowler said: “And still city council officers continue to plough ahead ignoring all local opinion.

"Fifty shades of arrogance perhaps? The council has not listened to word we have written or said. We just hope that the independent inspector will give us the time to examine the sensible arguments without bias.”

The town council and city council point out that if Alresford is to take 500 homes over the next 15-20 years then the alternative to Sun Lane is other sites across the town, such as Arlebury Park and New Farm Road which are just as controversial and less sustainable.

The council cabinet is due to support the local plan at its meeting on February 29. The campaigners want the housing to be more evenly spread around the town.
