A MAN has been seriously injured  in a crash on a major Hampshire road.

The A31 from Winchester to Alton is shut after a collision between a van and a Land Rover.

Police, firefighters and ambulances were called at around 12.30pm and the driver of the Land Rover has been taken to hospital for 'severe leg injuries'.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance Service, said: "We sent two rapid response vehicles,  an ambulance, one ambulance officer and the air ambulance attended as well."

"The male driver of the Land Rover was trapped in his vehicle with severe leg injuries and he was taken to Royal Hampshire County Hospital."

He added the van driver was also taken to hospital but the extent of his injuries is unknown.

A spokeswoman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said that two appliances, one from Winchester and one from Eastleigh were called to an incident at 12:36pm on the A31.

The spokeswoman said: “We attended an incident at 12:36pm, it was a road traffic incident with one car and a van. 

“We extricated one male casualty and the stop call was at 1.20pm.”

The road is closed in both directions between the Alresford Road roundabout and Orr’s Meadow.

Police said diversions are in place.
