A SMOKE alarm alerted householders to a fire in the roof of their home early yesterday morning.
Around ten firefighters tackled the fire in an extension at a semi-detached house in Lovells Walk, Alresford at around 3.50am.
They stopped the flames spreading from the extension into the rest of the house and also to the neighbouring property.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus used two hose reels to bring it under under control by 5.30am.
Crew manager Nick Mills, of Winchester Fire Station, said today: "The occupants were alerted by the smoke alarms. The fire could of spread but we managed to stop it.
"It shows the importance of these alarms. It would not have been easy to spot by passers-by. Everyone inside was asleep."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
