WINCHESTER planners have rejected proposals to redevelop Alresford Police Station.
Retirement housing developer McCarthy and Stone proposed knocking down the redundant police station on Station Road and building a three-storey block of 15 flats.
The developer also wanted to convert and extend the listed Station Mill offices next door into five apartments.
But the planning viewing sub-committee yesterday visited the site and unanimously turned down the proposal.
The plan has divided opinion in Alresford; nine letters of objection were received but 30 letters of support plus the backing of the town council.
The council said the development would result in the loss of employment premises.
The extension of the Victorian mill would be over-dominant and result in the "over-domestication" of the setting of a listed building.
The planners said there was also insufficient amenity space for the flats.

A spokesman for the developer said: “McCarthy & Stone is disappointed with the council’s decision to refuse its proposal, which had received support from the local community and New Alresford Town Council. It is currently considering its options and will update the community in due course.”
