PUPILS from an Alresford primary school were given the chance to take part in a salad making competition, Tate Slyfield writes.

The competition, launched by Alresford Salads, gave Year Four and Five pupils from Sun Hill Junior School hands-on experience showing the manufacturing of watercress and salad through a tour of the factory.

The pupils who created the two best products saw their salads being made in the factory before the winner was chosen.

The winning salad will specifically be produced by Alresford Salads for the Alresford Watercress Festival.

The virtual tour allowed pupils’ to wear protective equipment to see what must be worn in food production. They also learnt about different types of salads and were put to the test by developing new salad products.

Steven Turner, Site Operations Manager at Alresford Salads said: We’re delighted to be running the Design a Salad Competition once again with Sun Hill Junior School pupils. They really enjoy tasting the different leaves and getting creative, putting together great combinations to create something new. It is important for us to show the pupils where watercress and other salad leaves come from, how our business operates and the great opportunities the food industry has to offer.”

Alresford Watercress Festival takes place on Sunday May 17.

The winning salad will have packs sold by pupils on the Alresford Salads stand to raise funds for the school.
