A WOMAN was seriously injured in a collision as she crossed a major Hampshire road last night.

The victim, a 65-year-old pedestrian, was struck by a car on the A272 at New Cheriton near Winchester at around 9.20pm.

Police closed the single carriageway road and diverted through traffic to allow paramedics to safely treat the female who had suffered head injuries.

They are today appealing for witnesses to the incident which involved a blue Nissan SX Coupe heading towards Winchester.

An ambulance was called and stayed at the scene for around an hour so the victim could be stabilised before moving off slowly to take her to hospital where she remains this morning.

The woman suffered what were deemed to be life-threatening injuries. Her condition is serious but no longer considered life threatening, said a police spokesman today.

One neighbour said today she believed the driver had stopped and raised the alarm.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said: "It was dreadful. People tried their best to help her by the road before the paramedics arrived."

The Nissan driver, a 21-year-old man from Fareham, was uninjured. He was interviewed under caution but not arrested.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle driving prior to it.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Sergeant Gabriel Snuggs at the Eastleigh Roads Policing unit, quoting Operation Latona, on 101.
