THE bishops of Winchester and Southampton will commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War at services today.
The Bishop of Winchester, the Rt Rev Tim Dakin, will attend the Remembrance Sunday service at Winchester Cathedral, after which he will join other local representatives when wreaths will be laid at Winchester’s war memorial.
Bishop Tim said: “On the centenary of the First World War we will remember those who died in this devastating conflict, in particular, the 459 people from Winchester who were killed.”
The Bishop of Southampton, the Rt Rev Jonathan Frost, will join Southampton’s Cenotaph ceremony.
Bishop Jonathan said: “We owe a great deal to the men and women who dedicate their lives to defending our country, sometimes paying the ultimate sacrifice.”
Services include:
Winchester Cathedral, 10am. Service of Remembrance at the Cathedral with wreath laying at the War Memorial at 11am, following a two-minute silence.
Alresford, 10.45am. Remembrance Service at St John the Baptist Church.
Eastleigh, 10.15am. Parade from Mitchell Road, followed by a service at 11am at the War Memorial, Leigh Road Recreation Ground.
Southampton city centre, 10.50am. A procession from the Art Gallery to the Cenotaph, led by the city maces and the mayor, before the laying of wreaths.
