THERE were mixed feelings at a special anniversary for a Winchester school recently.

Mayor of Winchester Frank Pearson helped the Westgate School celebrate 60 years of state boarding for girls at its Rotherly House unit.

But it was also a sad day for the school as the county council is closing the boarding house from July 2013.

A number of former boarders travelled for the anniversary last month and were given tours of their old home by school staff.

Rotherly was set up in 1952 to cater for the education of daughters of service personnel. It was one of a handful of similar facilities across the UK.

Over its 60-years it has also welcomed international students from Hong Kong, Spain, France and The Falklands.
