IT’S only the second sunflower they’ve grown — and they don’t know what the secret to their success is.

But Anne Cornes, 65 and her husband, Kenneth, 69, have planted a flower at their Winchester home that now towers over passers-by.

Mrs Cornes said: “We planted it in May or June and it just kept growing. It’s in the front garden and it’s just appeared and people pass and they stop and say how nice it is.”

Mr and Mrs Cornes, of Gordon Avenue, Highcliffe, also planted a sunflower last year, but they say this one has outgrown all expectations.

At approximately 12 feet, it puts surrounding plants in the shade. But the Cornes will need to raise their game if they want compete on the global stage — the Guinness world record for a sunflower currently stands at 24ft 6ins.
