Lib Dems announce candidate for Police Commissioner
THE Liberal Democrats have chosen an Eastleigh councillor as their candidate to be the first Hampshire Police and Crime Commissioner.
David Goodall, 49, says that cutting back paperwork, combined with effective use of technology, will be the key to overcoming the financial constraints facing the new commissioner.
He said: “There are ways of being an effective police force without spending a fortune.
“I believe the key is getting value for money by ensuring that police officer's time is maximised doing police work and not paperwork. Good use of technology and a cull of forms will be essential to achieve this.”
Mr Goodall said his family background means he understands the challenges faced by police officers, as both his father and brother have served with the force in Hampshire. The Liberal Democrat's man will be a sizeable underdog though, as he faces opposition from the likes of Labour candidate Jacqui Rayment, former chair of the Hampshire Police Authority, and high-profile former MP and cabinet minister Michael Mates.
Mr Mates, himself a former Lieutenant Colonel in the army, has announced that Lieutenant Colonel Chris Brannigan, a former tank commander in The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, will be his running mate. Should Mates be elected, Chris Brannigan would be appointed as his deputy.
