MORE than 30,000 people enjoyed watching the Olympic and Paralympic games on the two giant screens on Winchester Cathedral Green.

The city council estimates 32,405 people in total gathered for the unique outdoor experience.

Some 26,655 people watched the Olympics over 17 days, with 4,000 at the opening ceremony and 4,500 at the closing.

For the 12 days of the Paralympics that ended on Sunday the overall figure was 5,750, with 250 at the opening and 550 at the closing.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture and Sport said: “With these two giant screens in place in the Cathedral Close, Winchester offered a unique backdrop to witness the world-class entertainment that is the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.”

She added: “Our Sports and Physical Activity Team are to be congratulated on their considerable efforts to ensure our District is firmly on the Olympic map.”
