Nicole Blaxland, 14, Hampshire Girls U15s cricketer, opens the nets in Kings Worthy
A VILLAGE near Winchester is poised to nurture the stars of the future with the opening of new cricket nets.
More than 60 supporters joined Kings Worthy’s cricketing youth for the official opening at Eversley Park on August 30.
The young cricketers present were led by Nicole Blaxland, aged 14, who spearheaded the initiative and organised a petition that attracted some 100 names.
She argued for the nets to be reinstated as previously cricketers had to travel to River Park and St Cross in Winchester or Easton.
Upon cutting the ribbon, Nicole addressed the crowd. She said: “Thank you for asking me to open the nets. I’m delighted they have been set up and I’m really grateful to the parish council for making this happen.”
Kings Worthy and Abbots Worthy councillor Kerstin Reiners said: “The parish council is very keen to keep the Olympic legacy alive by encouraging physical activity. The cricket nets cost £8,000, a sizeable investment. But with many already eagerly using them, it has been a worthwhile investment”.
The gathering concluded with some bowling action, followed by nibbles and drinks enjoyed by all at the Worthies Sports and Social Club.
