Elderly woman victim of distraction burglary in Winchester.
A MAN has duped his way into an elderly Winchester woman's home, making off with a safe containing valuables.
Police have described the incident, which took place in Fivefields Road on Thursday (September 6), as a 'distraction burglary'.
The 74-year-old victim allowed the suspect entry to her home as she thought he had come to carry out pre-arranged repairs. The victim's daughter raised the alarm when she returned home to discover that a safe had been stolen containing money, three passports and a gold chain.
Acting Police Sergeant Graham Wren from Winchester police station said: “The victim has been distracted by a man whom she thought was carrying out repairs to the house.
“This sort of incident is thankfully rare in Winchester but I would like to remind people to check the identification of people calling at the door even if you are expecting them. If a caller is genuine they will understand your concerns.”
The incident occurred at around 3.45pm on Thursday, September 6 at a house in Fivefields Road. The suspect is described as a male of medium to large build, aged between 40 to 50-years-old and just over just over 6ft tall. He was wearing a florescent jacket and was seen getting into a small white van following the incident.
