A TRIO from Winchester Prison went on the run on Saturday (May 26) but thankfully it did not include any inmates.

Three officers at the jail – Mark Boyd, Jon Watts and Kirsten Higgins – put their best foot forward for charity.

Their destination was Haslar secure immigration centre in Gosport, which is 26 miles away from Winchester.

Mr Boyd said: “We did have a few hundred prisoners volunteer to complete the run with us, but we were unsure as to how many we would finish with.”

Dubbed the ‘prison to prison’ marathon, the trio was raising funds for three good causes.

They included Help for Heroes along with Pray for Jay, the campaign to help paralysed Southampton stuntman Jay Young.

The 23-year-old used to work opposite the prison in Romsey Road at Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

The third charity is the Meningitis Trust. It comes after Mr Boyd’s wife, Carol, was admitted to hospital with bacterial meningitis earlier this month (May). She is now recovering, having left hospital.

The runners finished their challenge in six hours and ten minutes.
