LOTS of weird and wonderful shows were ‘clogging up’ the streets of Winchester last weekend.

The attractions at Mayfest included several clog dancing teams who showed off their moves to the shoppers.

The event on Saturday (May 26) was a celebration of traditional and contemporary music, dance and song.

It took place in several locations throughout the city, and often in public places free of charge.

The activities included folk music workshops at St Lawrence Church in The Square run by the Madding Crowd.

Clog dancers then took to the High Street and Cathedral Close.

It was followed by a parade of dancers heading from the cathedral to the Brooks Centre via The Buttercross.

The Brooks Centre was the centre of attention in the late afternoon with several live musicians holding a ‘roots’ session.

The bands taking part included Winchester band, The Limes. The group features Jimmy Fish and Tess Woodford, who also perform in Aphrodite and the Alphabet.

Said Mr Fish: “The Limes started in 2004 and this is the first time we’ve performed in a shopping centre and the acoustics are surprisingly good in here. Perhaps this will be the first show of many.”

The Limes also includes Will Foley. He said: “We’re playing here and also at the Willow Tree later on, and we’ve been there before for open mic night and it’s gone really well.”

The evening concert of live music at the Willow Tree at Durngate was part of the Mayfest evening programme.

The event concluded with a Ceilidh at Winchester Discovery Centre in Jewry Street featuring folk band, Threepenny Bit.
